What Could Cause Low Blood Pressure?- AFC Urgent Care

You're probably familiar with high blood pressure, and you may even know the dangers that having high blood pressure can pose to your heart health. But what happens when your blood pressure is low? Our team at AFC Urgent Care Fountain City wants to share some insight into low blood pressure and what it can mean for your health.

What Is Low Blood Pressure?

Normally, the lower your blood pressure, the better. But that has limits—if your blood pressure reading is lower than 90/60 and you’re exhibiting symptoms, your blood pressure is considered dangerously low. A low blood pressure reading by itself is not cause for concern in most cases. If your blood pressure registers low, don’t be alarmed. Take it again after a period of time, then check in with your doctor if it hasn’t rebounded to a more normal level.

Symptoms of Low Blood Pressure

  • Fainting
  • Dizziness
  • A feeling of lightheadedness
  • Chest pain
  • Blurred vision
  • Increased thirst
  • Nausea

What Causes Low Blood Pressure?

There are many potential causes of low blood pressure. These may include prolonged bed rest, heart health issues, issues affecting the endocrine system, nutritional deficiencies and the use of certain medications. Pregnancy can also lead to low blood pressure—it is normal for blood pressure to drop during the first 24 weeks of pregnancy. That’s because circulation expands during pregnancy and hormones cause the blood vessels to dilate, which can lower blood pressure.

How to Maintain Healthy Blood Pressure

  • Eat a balanced diet filled with fruits and veggies.
  • Drink more water.
  • Exercise most days of the week.
  • Get between seven and nine hours of sleep each night.
  • Limit alcohol consumption.
  • Don’t smoke.
