What Can I Do to Protect My Skin From the Sun?

Did you know? One in five Americans will develop some form of skin cancer by the time they turn age 70. That makes skin cancer the most common form of skin cancer among Americans.

With the sun shining for longer each day and the temps on the rise, it’s natural to want to head outside. But before you do, our team at AFC Urgent Care Gastonia would like to share some tips on how to protect your skin.

Who’s at Risk for Skin Cancer?

That’s a trick question, honestly. Every single person is at risk of developing skin cancer, even those of us with darker skin. In fact, Hispanics and African Americans are often diagnosed with more severe cases of skin cancer.

That’s why it is important for everyone to take steps to protect their skin from the harmful rays of the sun. If you’re at a higher risk, take extra precautions.

Risk Factors for Skin Cancer

  • Blonde or red hair
  • Fair complexion
  • History of sunburns
  • Tanning bed use

How Can I Protect My Skin?

Your first and best defense is to use sunscreen. Choose a sunscreen that’s labeled as “broad spectrum” with a sun protection factor of at least 30.

Apply the sunscreen to all exposed skin at least 30 minutes before going outdoors. Then reapply at least every two hours while you’re outside, or more often if you’re sweating or swimming, since sunscreen is not waterproof. There are also other steps you can take to protect your skin.

Sun Safety Basics

  • Avoid spending time outdoors between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Seek shade whenever possible while outdoors.
  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat to protect your ears and scalp.
  • Find and wear a lip balm containing SPF.
