Is It Possible to Stay Healthy During the Holidays?

November 15, 2023

Oh, the holiday season. All of the delicious food, cozy nights on the couch and flowing drinks can make this a wonderful time of year to revel in another season of life surrounded by friends and family. However, all of this celebration can be hard on your body!

Running around getting everything done ahead of time can put a strain on your immune system, and feeling sluggish after too many celebrations can end in a stubborn illness at the most inconvenient time.

Our AFC Urgent Care Hickory team explains some simple ways to stay healthy while enjoying the holiday season to the fullest.

How Can I Avoid Getting an Infection?

This is a tricky one, since infections and other illnesses are so common at this time of year! While it is impossible to completely avoid coming into contact with different viruses or bacteria, you can take simple steps to take care of your body during this time to boost your immune system.

Regular exercise, a healthy diet and proper sleep can all support your body to give you the best chance of fighting off infection before you even get sick. We know it can be hard to slow down and get the rest you need during the holidays, but seven to nine hours of quality sleep every night can be the key to an infection-free season.

Avoiding Illness All Season

  • Bundle up when it is cold outside.
  • Get your flu vaccine.
  • Limit alcohol consumption.
  • Wash your hands.

What Food Should I Eat Over the Holiday Season?

Moderation, moderation, moderation! We know that the holidays are notorious for rich, delicious comfort food, and you certainly deserve to dig right in. However, choose a smaller plate size or be mindful of the portions you choose. Limit your sugar intake and alcohol consumption, and consider taking a walk after finishing your meal to get in a little bit of extra exercise.

One additional aspect that you need to be on the lookout for is the potential for foodborne illnesses. Undercooked eggs and meat could be harboring bacteria, or any perishable food that has been sitting out for over two hours could also make you really sick. Choose foods that have just come out of the oven or the fridge and leave off the options that have been sitting on a counter for a long time.

Practicing Proper Kitchen Safety

  • Use designated cutting boards for raw meat and produce.
  • Wash hands before handling food.
  • Don’t cook for others when you aren’t feeling well.
  • Understand specific allergies or dietary restrictions for those attending your party.

We wish you a safe and happy holiday season! Come see us at AFC Urgent Care Hickory if you aren’t feeling well.
