3 Ways to Keep the Kids Healthy This Summer | Hixson, TN Walk-In Clinic

Our team at AFC Urgent Care Hixson knows it can be challenging to even keep up with the kids during the summer—nevertheless to keep them on a healthy path. But we have some tips to help you make that happen.

On the Path to Good Health

First, make sure breakfast is an everyday event. It might be a cliche, but breakfast really is the most important meal of the day. By morning, our bodies have run out of the nutrients and energy we gave them the day before. In order to give your body the energy it needs to function, it’s important to fuel the body with a healthy, balanced breakfast. The ideal breakfast contains a combination of lean protein, healthy carbohydrates and a small amount of healthy fat. An egg or two scrambled in a tiny amount of olive oil and accompanied by a piece of whole grain toast is a good example. But you don’t have to stick with breakfast foods—feel free to have lunch or dinner for breakfast!

It’s also important to make sure to include fruits and vegetables throughout the day. These healthy powerhouses benefit the body in many ways, and they’re especially helpful during the hot summer months. Many fruits and veggies contain high amounts of water, which means they can help keep you hydrated. (And as a bonus, there are so many great fruits and vegetables in season during the summer!)

Second, make sure water is always available. When kids are running around outdoors, the body sweats out water at a fast rate. As a result, the water needs to be replaced, or dehydration occurs, which can have serious effects. Make sure your kids are drinking water continuously throughout the day—not just when they’re thirsty. If plain water isn’t doing the trick, entice them with some ice pops in the heat of the day.

Finally, make sure your kids are wearing sunscreen at all times when they’re outdoors. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 to all exposed areas of skin at least 30 minutes before your kids head out the door. Then be sure to interrupt their activities and reapply sunscreen at least every two hours during the day.

Don’t hesitate to visit AFC Urgent Care Hixson this summer for any medical issues your family might experience. From dehydration to sprained ankles to a bad sunburn (and everything in between), we’re here to help you stay safe and healthy this summer and beyond.
