How Can I Treat a Sunburn?

Getting a sunburn is never a fun experience, but unfortunately for many of us, it is something that is synonymous with summer. Sunburns are uncomfortable in the moment, but they can also cause long-term health complications such as skin cancer, which is why we always recommend preventing them as much as possible instead of focusing on treatment.

That being said, if you do accidentally get a sunburn, your AFC Urgent Care Hixson team is here to help you find relief with these useful tips, as well as some helpful facts regarding sun exposure in general.

How Dangerous Is Exposure to Direct Sunlight?

While many of us spend some time in the sunshine every day, unobstructed, prolonged exposure can be quite dangerous for our skin.

The sun has several types of UV rays that can penetrate into the skin’s inner layers if exposure is prolonged, which is why choosing to stay in the shade or use a broad-spectrum SPF sunscreen is such an important part of sun safety.

What to Do to Reduce Sun Exposure

  • Add shade features to your yard so you can stay out of direct sunlight.
  • Choose a sunscreen that is at least SPF 30 and broad-spectrum.
  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat and long clothing outdoors.

What If I Have Accidentally Gotten a Sunburn?

Even the most careful among us have likely gotten a sunburn at some point, but thankfully, there are some ways to find relief.

If you find that you have accidentally gotten a sunburn, there is no way to reduce the damage that has been done, but you can mitigate some of the painful aftereffects.

How to Treat a Sunburn

  • Use over-the-counter pain medicine as needed.
  • Apply moisturizers such as aloe vera gel.
  • Rehydrate to help the skin recover.
