Is It Safe for Kids to Receive COVID-19 and Flu Vaccines Together?

The COVID-19 vaccine has recently been deemed safe for everyone ages 5 and up. This is great news—especially for schools.

If you are planning to take your child to get the COVID-19 vaccine during flu season, it might be a good idea to get both at the same time. In fact, getting double-dosed has been deemed safe for children by the CDC and numerous medical experts.

Our AFC Urgent Care Hixson team elaborates on that below, so keep reading!

Why Is It Safe for Kids to Get the COVID-19 and Flu Vaccines Together?

There have not been any problems created by interactions between the two vaccines. Additionally, getting both vaccines at the same time has received the OK from both the CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Furthermore, these organizations recommend children receive their flu shot as soon as possible due to concerns that this flu season could be much more serious than last year because of no more required social distancing.

Ways for Children to Stay Safe at School

  • Wear a mask.
  • Use good handwashing techniques, such as washing hands for at least 20 seconds each time.
  • Use alcohol-rich hand sanitizer.
  • Cover mouth when coughing or sneezing.
  • Keep hands away from nose and mouth.
  • Don’t share water bottles, food or other personal items.

Is It Possible to Catch the Flu and COVID-19 at the Same Time?

Yes, it is. While COVID-19 is far more dangerous overall than the flu, the flu can still be severe among kids.

During flu season, it’s especially important to encourage your children to be health-conscious and safe at school. Having them vaccinated against both illnesses is one of the most effective measures you can take in keeping them safe and healthy this winter. If your kids being to experience any of the symptoms we’ve listed below, keep them home from school to avoid spreading a potential virus to others.
