When Should You See a Doctor for a Fever?

When the temperatures rise outside, as they have certainly already done this season in Tennessee, our body temperatures rise, too.

But it can always be hard to distinguish between normal body temperature fluctuations and an actual fever. That’s why our AFC Urgent Care Hixson team wants to share some insight.

When Should I Be Worried About My Fever?

There are two different types of fever—low-grade and high-grade fever.

If a fever rises above 100.4, you need to seek medical attention, particularly when a child is involved. This is considered a high-grade fever. A low-grade fever is anything above 98.6 and lower than 100.4, and these can usually be treated with home remedies.

Ways to Bring Down a Fever

  • Get plenty of rest.
  • Drink fluids.
  • Take a tepid bath.
  • Stay as cool as possible.
  • Take over-the-counter medications like acetaminophen or ibuprofen.

Why Does a Fever Happen?

A fever is defined as a body temperature that’s higher than normal. A fever in and of itself is not a medical condition or disease.

Instead, it’s a sign that your body and immune system are trying to fight off an infection or illness.

Common Causes of Fevers

  • Flu
  • Common cold
  • Certain vaccinations
  • Teething
  • Some inflammatory diseases
  • Major sunburn
