Who Is Still at Risk for COVID-19?

Everyone is at risk. COVID-19 cases are on the rise again. Cases have spiked all across the country, especially here in the southern states. We know it’s frustrating!

COVID-19 still has the potential to make anyone really sick, so it is important to know how to avoid getting sick or know what to do if you start experiencing symptoms.

Our AFC Urgent Care Indian Trail team explains more below about who is at risk of COVID-19 again this year and what to do to avoid getting sick.

Can Anyone Contract COVID-19?

Yes, unfortunately anyone can contract COVID-19 at any given time. This is why it is so important to be aware of your surroundings and take care of yourself. The coronavirus is always mutating and changing, so if you have already gotten sick from COVID-19 in previous years, that doesn’t mean you will be immune to every strain moving forward.

This is especially true for our more vulnerable populations, including young children, older adults and anyone with a compromised immune system. Coming to see us right away at the onset of your symptoms can help us diagnose you faster so you can get treated quicker. There are some great antiviral drug treatments available now that can help reduce your symptom severity but work best when taken as soon as you start to get sick.

The Most Common COVID-19 Symptoms

  • Sudden fever
  • Chills
  • Persistent cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Fatigue or muscle aches

Can I Still Get Vaccinated Against COVID-19?

Yes, and we definitely recommend that you do. Getting any available boosters help support your current immune system to help recognize and tackle COVID-19 faster and more accurately.

While it is still possible to get a breakthrough infection even if you have been vaccinated, the chances of you experiencing a serious or deadly case of COVID-19 is significantly reduced. It is important to stay current with recommended boosters, too. The latest boosters will be available beginning in late September or October.

COVID-19 Symptoms to Watch For

  • Respiratory distress
  • Persistent chest pain or pressure
  • Confusion
  • Pale, gray or blue-colored skin and lips
