DOT Physicals 101 for New Commercial Drivers

April 13, 2023

Want to know if you’re physically, emotionally, and mentally fit to work as a commercial driver? You have to undergo DOT physicals. Don’t fret if you don’t know about it. This article will guide you in detail about the process and why it is so important.

DOT Physicals Post Training

The DOT (Department of Transportation) physical is an exam for commercial drivers before heading to the road. These tests are designed to ensure the driver is physically well to operate the vehicles without causing a threat or damage to themselves or the ones around them. It is one of the smartest approaches for commercial drivers needing a driving license post-training.

Chronic Conditions DOT Physicals Focus On

The DOT physicals are aimed toward the overall well-being of the drivers. These tests focus primarily on chronic conditions like:

  • General Health Requirements

The general health requirements for the DOT physicals require drivers to be in good health. They should have no major health issues which could hinder their driving.

For instance, extremely weak eyesight is a big no for commercial drivers as they need vision. Similarly, other diseases, such as diabetes and other hypertension, may also stop drivers from clearing their DOT tests.

  • Exemptions for Patients

The DOT physicals provide certain exemptions for divers. These restrictions are for the ones that aim to present an application to the agency for review. The information for these exemptions may include the following:

  • Physical qualification exam information
  • Medical records
  • Employment history
  • Driving experience
  • Motor vehicle records

Applicants must keep these exemptions in mind while applying for DOT physical. You can present your application; the agency typically takes around 180 days for application completion. The drivers who want exemptions because of hearing or seizures can use the legislative details listed in 49 CFR 391.41(b)(8) or 391.41(b)(11).

These laws apply to individuals who cannot receive an MCSA-5876, a non-restricted Medical Examiner’s Certificate. However, they can leverage other form options, such as an MCSA-5876, making them an eligible candidate.

Note that these exemptions are specifically for operators looking into the commercial motor vehicle requirements set by law. There are no additional exemptions or waivers for drivers according to the requirements set in the interstate laws. You can apply for these exemptions by limiting operations to interstate commerce.

  • Diabetes

Diabetes can be a serious issue for commercial drivers at a higher risk of medical issues. It can lead to problems with driving and increase the chances of sleep apnea, depression, and hypertension.

Although there was an existing DOT package on the site for diabetes patients, it is no longer available. You can check the New Diabetes Standard Overview Webinar for more details.
