What To Do If You Get COVID-19

November 25, 2020

The second wave of COVID is among us, and it’s important to be as informed as possible. Understanding how it is spread is key to not spreading it to others. There is currently no vaccine for COVID, so the only way to avoid catching it is by social distancing, wearing a mask, and frequently washing your hands. If you think you have had COVID in the past, AFC Urgent Care Louisville offers antibody testing. Learn more about what to do if you get COVID this year.

Symptoms of COVID

A majority of COVID cases are asymptomatic. This means they do not show any symptoms. If you do show symptoms, they can range from mild to more severe. Some instances of COVID have required hospitalization due to extremely severe symptoms. Symptoms of COVID can include:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sore throat
  • Loss of taste or smell

You can become contagious one to two days before symptoms begin and remain infectious for ten days. Symptoms can show anywhere between four to ten days after infection. Even if you do not experience symptoms, you can still give the virus to others. The only way to know for sure if you have COVID is by getting tested for it. A rapid COVID test can have results within 15 minutes of the test.

COVID is a respiratory illness that is spread through droplets from the nose or mouth and inhaled by a person nearby. This can be spread through sneezing, coughing, or even talking too close to someone. Social distancing and wearing a mask are the best ways to avoid getting sick.

Treatment of COVID

There is currently no cure for COVID. Once infected, it’s important to get plenty of rest and stay hydrated. Some medications can be prescribed to help alleviate symptoms. If you are experiencing symptoms or have tested positive, avoid contact with others as much as you can. Individuals over the age of 65 are considered high-risk. This means they have a higher risk of having complications if they become sick with COVID and may require hospitalization.

The incubation period for COVID is 14 days. If living with other people, disinfect doorknobs and other areas that are touched frequently. This will help them from catching the virus until the 14 days are over. Wash your hands often, and be sure to monitor your symptoms to see if they are getting worse.
