Prior to the start of the school year, your child will be required to have an updated physical on file with the school nurse. Physicals must be performed and updated within 30 days of the start of the academic year and pediatrician offices often book up weeks in advance in order to get all patients in for their physicals. If your pediatrician is unavailable for your student’s school physical, you can visit AFC Urgent Care Louisville & Boulder to get your child up-to-date for the start of the school year!
How a School Physical Works
A school physical ensures that your child is healthy enough to participate in classes without disruption or aggravating current conditions that may have been previously undetected. A physical begins with a standard checkup to check your child’s vital signs and measure height, weight and check vision and hearing. Students participating in school or community athletic programs can have their sports physical done at the same time as their school physical. The following take place during a school physical exam:
- Measuring height, weight and BMI
- Checking vision, hearing and blood pressure
- Examination of ears, nose and throat
- Examination of the spine for scoliosis
- Review of medical and vaccination history
- Updating any vaccinations that are out-of-date (this will require an additional charge for each immunization)
- Necessary blood work
If any conditions, illnesses and injuries are detected that could affect your child’s ability to attend classes or participate in sports, we will provide treatment or refer you for specialized care to get your child the attention they need.
When should a physical be scheduled?
A physical should be performed no earlier than 30 days before the first day of school to have on file for the upcoming year. If a sports physical is needed for the season, it should be on file prior to the first practice. Please note that multiple physicals may be required throughout the year for multi-season athletes. Getting in early at AFC Urgent Care Louisville & Boulder reduces the chances of not being able to see your pediatrician for a physical due to unavailability.
