If you are applying for or renewing a commercial driver’s license (CDL), you will need to undergo a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical to ensure that you meet the medical requirements set forth by local and federal agencies. If you do not have a physical on file or your physical has expired, you will not be legally permitted to operate a commercial vehicle in Colorado or over state lines. Open seven days a week, AFC Urgent Care Louisville & Boulder provide an efficient location to get your DOT physical on a walk-in basis. Our center works with employers across Boulder County to provide high-quality medical services to employees and ensure that they can perform their job duties safely.
Requirements to Pass a DOT Physical
The Department of Transportation has several regulations in
place in order to pass a physical for your CDL. In order to attain your medical
certification, applicants must meet:
- Blood pressure: under 140/90 with or
without the use of medication - Vision: at least 20/40 in each eye with
corrective lenses or unassisted - Hearing: must be able to hear a whisper
from five feet away - Medication and chronic conditions: must
have a proven history of controlling and/or managing symptoms of chronic
conditions with proper medications, without abuse
While an employer may require more frequent examinations, you will need to undergo physicals at least every two years to maintain your medical certification. Based on your occupation, employer or circumstances, you may need to undergo DOT physicals annually, bi-annually or even monthly. Commercial drivers without an in-date DOT physical will need to downgrade to a regular driver’s license.
