Keeping Your Child Healthy This School Year

September 23, 2019

Keeping our children happy and healthy is the priority for every parent, but sometimes it’s easier than others. During the school year, children are at a much higher risk of getting sick because so many other children surround them. In general, children have weak immune systems that aren’t fully developed. There’s nothing you can do to make their immune system grow faster, but there are ways to protect them until they’re older!
Get the Flu Shot
Your child should receive a flu shot each year. The flu changes each year slightly, which means that even if they got a flu shot last year, they’re still at risk this year. The flu shot is a quick process with little to no risks or side effects. It’s covered by most insurance companies in full and very easily accessible. The fastest way to get your child vaccinated from the flu is to visit your local urgent care center. They might even have a nasal spray version available if your child is afraid of shots!
Yearly Physical
While you’re at the urgent care to get your child a flu shot, ask about an annual physical. An annual physical is the best way to make sure you’re up to date on your child’s health. If there are any current health concerns or questions, talk with the doctor during the physical.
Importance of Hand Washing
Children are never too young or too old to understand the importance of handwashing. Hand washing is the most effective way of avoiding illness and the spread of germs. Your child should wash their hands frequently throughout the day. Each handwashing should last at least 20 seconds. During those 20 seconds, they need to be scrubbing their palms, the tops of their hands, and between all of their fingers. You can attach a small hand sanitizer to their backpack and lunch box too for added safety. Make sure to tell them that the hand sanitizer shouldn’t always be used instead of traditional hand washing though! If you have a young child, begin making a habit of handwashing at home before the school year begins.
The school will be here before you know it so doesn’t let another day go to waste without protecting your child! Visit your local urgent care today to get your child vaccinated and get their physical completed. Once that’s out of the way you can focus on the fun part – school supply shopping!
