When to Visit Urgent Care with the Flu

When you initially begin to experience flu symptoms, it is easy to just want to wait it out to see if at-home remedies will treat it. However, when left untreated it can be easy for the flu to progress and develop into a more serious complication that will require hospitalization. Learn how to tell symptoms of the flu apart and when to go to urgent care for walk-in treatment!

Sinus congestion

Flu symptoms typically onset quickly, including some congestion. You can take over-the-counter decongestants in order to relieve this symptom. If you are still experiencing a stuffed or runny nose within one week, you should visit AFC Urgent Care for further testing. Prolonged congestion can be a symptom of a bacterial infection, which will need prescription antibiotics to fully treat before it spreads.

High-grade fever

A fever is typically the first sign of the influenza virus. While adults can take over-the-counter supplements like ibuprofen or aspirin to relieve body aches and reduce the fever, you may need additional care if it does not break after 24 hours. If your fever reaches 103 F, you should go to urgent care immediately for treatment. Because a child’s immune system is still developing, the care for a fever is a little different. Children cannot take over-the-counter pain medications because the ingredients can cause a condition called Reye’s Syndrome to develop, which can lead to liver and brain damage. if your child’s temperature reaches 101 F, you should seek treatment as soon as possible.

Symptoms of dehydration

A heightened temperature can cause you to lose fluids quickly, which can lead to dehydration if you are not replenishing them. Additional flu symptoms that can lead to dehydration are diarrhea and vomiting, which quickly depletes your fluids. If you are exhibiting either, it is critical to keep drinking water regardless of your thirst level in order to prevent dehydration. If you need a break from water, you can also drink juices, soups and electrolyte-filled sports drinks to replenish lost nutrients. Seek care if you beginning to feel dizzy or faint.
