Often accompanied by a bad cough and breathlessness, bronchitis is the inflammation of bronchial passages within the lungs. The breathlessness is caused by the passages being closed off which restricts the airways.

Brochitis is classified as acute or chronic. Chronic is a long term health issue which needs to be managed while acute typically lasts a week or so and will go away.

Acute bronchitis is typically viral and will go away on its own. Chronic bronchitis can be a severe long term sickness which can require frequent medical attention. Those who smoke do not typically recover easily from bronchitis and are more likely to have chronic bronchitis. Chronic bronchitis is mainly caused by cigarette smoking and exposure to pollutants.

In addition to the coughing and breathlessness symptom, you may also experience phlegm and soreness in the chest. Wheezing and tiredness are also common symptoms.

If you have bronchitis, get plenty of rest and drink plenty of fluids. Avoid smoking at all costs. A bronchodialator may be prescribed to alleviate symptoms. If necessary, doctors can also prescribe a stronger cough medicine.
