What is World Health Day?

World Health Day is an international day dedicated to health promotion. It is celebrated annually on April 7th to mark the anniversary of the World Health Organization (WHO) creation and provides an opportunity to mobilize action around a public health theme that concerns the world.

Brief History of World Health Day

The first World Health Assembly initiated World Health Day in 1948 to mark the creation of the World Health Organization

World Health Day is celebrated every year on the 7th of April. Each year, World Health Day sets out to increase awareness on various health issues of global relevance, as expounded by WHO.

Most health issues identified by the WHO were primarily devoted to combating recurring health conditions in countries with poorer population sufficiency. This is accompanied by an appeal to the economically better-off countries to help poorer countries solve their problems through human and financial support and cooperate with the WHO.

The WHO’s Health for All strategy, launched in 1977, increasingly brought issues of strategic importance to the development of national health systems, such as primary health care, health communication, and health promotion, into the spotlight.

What is the focus this year?

Annually the organization celebrates World Health Day with different themes. In 2017, it was “depression.” In 2018 the theme was “Health for all.” This year’s theme connotes “building a fairer and healthier world for everyone.”

The COVID-19 pandemic has prompted us to be concerned about our health and health systems and their weaknesses. If the fragility of our lives unites us, access to care continues to divide us cruelly.

We are currently living in a very delicate moment in world history. The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is causing countries to close their borders to contain the spread and prevent further collapses in health. Economies are in decline, and most regrettable, thousands of lives are being lost every day.

During this period, the (WHO) is striving to help health systems worldwide navigate this pandemic.

What we can do on our part is to take care of our health and also help to the best of our ability reduce the spread of the coronavirus by adhering to the various COVID-19 directives such as washing our hand with soap and water, keeping a safe distance from people, wearing our masks, and so on.
