What to Know About Sinus Infections

Sinus infections are most common in the colder months when other illnesses can lead to you feeling congested. Some of the key symptoms of a sinus infection include heaviness or fullness in your face, especially around your eyes and nose where the sinuses are located. Learning when you have a cold and when you are experiencing a sinus infection is critical to getting the right treatment and getting quick relief.

Causes of a Sinus Infection

A sinus infection can be caused by illness and environmental factors. A sinus infection often follows a cold or flareup of seasonal allergies. However, if you are often exposed to tobacco smoke or smog, your sinuses can clog up, which allows bacteria to build up and develop an infection.

Symptoms of a sinus infection

Each sinus infection is different, and the presence of symptoms may vary. Signs of an infection include:

  • Chest and nasal congestion
  • Stuffed and/or runny nose
  • Pain in cheeks, ears, eyes, or forehead
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Fatigue

Preventing a sinus infection

You can prevent a sinus infection by taking several pro-active steps:

Washing your hands throughout the day

You touch a number of surfaces each day that can be home to a wide range of germs, including doorknobs, stair rails, elevator buttons and kitchen counters. You should take time to wash your hands periodically throughout the day, especially after using the restroom, before and after handling food and changing a diaper. Make sure you use antibacterial soap and hot water, scrubbing for at least thirty seconds. Hand sanitizer can be used between washing your hands, but it is critical to remember that sanitizer will not be able to remove any germs or dirt that have built up.

Clean off your surfaces

Take some time each day to wipe down any surfaces you commonly use, including your kitchen counter, work desk or even your steering wheel. Germs living on surfaces can live longer than germs on your hands, where they are easily transmittable from place to place. Antibacterial wipes are available at any convenience or big box store and can easily and gently clean most surfaces. Visit an office supply store for cleaning agents that can work on electronics including phones, keyboards and laptops.
