Top 5 Tips for Handling and Preventing Bee Stings

September 1, 2024

Bee ready to sting you this angry bee season

1. Opt for Neutral Colors

Avoid bright or floral-patterned clothing when spending time outdoors. Bees are naturally attracted to colors that resemble flowers. Choosing dark or neutral-colored clothing can help reduce the risk of attracting them.

2. Stay Calm If a Bee Approaches

If a bee flies near you, remain calm and avoid sudden movements. Swatting at the bee or making quick, jerky motions can startle it and increase the chance of getting stung. By staying still, you lower the risk of provoking the bee.

3. Cover Your Food and Drinks

Bees are drawn to sugary foods and drinks. When eating outside, make sure your food is covered to prevent attracting bees. If possible, enjoy your meals indoors where bees are less likely to be a problem.

4. Be on the Lookout for Bee Nests

Check around your home and garden for potential bee nests, especially in hidden or sheltered spots. If you find a nest, do not attempt to handle it yourself. Contact a pest control professional to deal with it safely.

5. What to Do If You Get Stung

  • Remove the Stinger Quickly: Use a flat object like a credit card to scrape out the stinger. Avoid using tweezers or pinching the stinger, as this can push more venom into the wound.
  • Clean the Sting Area: Wash the area with soap and water to help prevent infection and remove any remaining venom from the skin.
  • Apply Ice: Place an ice pack on the sting site to reduce swelling and numb the pain.
  • Apply the ice in intervals to avoid damaging the skin.
  • Watch for Allergic Reactions: Keep an eye out for signs of an allergic reaction, such as hives, difficulty breathing, or severe swelling. If you experience these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.
