10 Common Illnesses to Watch for During the Fall

October 21, 2019

Fall is a time of year that many of us look forward to. With the pumpkin patches, Thanksgiving feasts, and trick-or-treating it’s hard not to! Unfortunately, fall is also a time when illnesses spread rapidly. More contagious diseases are prevalent during the fall each year than almost any other time of year. These are the 10 most common that you need to be on the lookout for.

  1. Influenza

Flu season begins in the fall and typically peaks during the winter. Influenza can be prevented using the flu vaccine, which is up to 80% effective. The vaccine is safe for anybody of the age of 6 months.

  1. Allergies

The falling leaves often create an influx of seasonal allergy symptoms. If you notice sneezing, coughing, watery or itchy eyes, or a runny nose, it could be seasonal allergies. A doctor can point you in the direction of an antihistamine to help relieve your symptoms.

  1. Asthma

Asthma is associated with shortness of breath, coughing, and wheezing. Asthma sufferers typically suffer from seasonal allergies as well. Your doctor can prescribe something to help limit and manage your symptoms.

  1. Arthritis

Arthritis is known to flair up in colder weather. The sudden shift between summer and fall can kickstart arthritis pain one again for those suffering with the condition.

  1. Raynaud Syndrome

Poor circulation is worsened by dropping temperatures, causing Raynaud’s syndrome to become more severe. Look out for swelling, numbness, and discoloration of hands or feet.

  1. Heart Disease

The decreased blood circulation causes a higher rate of heart disease too. It’s a good idea to get a physical and monitor any sudden changes you notice as they could be a warning sign for heart disease.

  1. Seasonal Affective Disorder

SAD is also known as seasonal depression, which typically begins in the fall. Shorter days and colder temperatures cause many people to fall into a depression. Symptoms include sleep changes, appetite changes, and disinterest in daily activities.

  1. Migraines

Weather changes can also lead to severe migraines. If you begin to notice that your headaches are becoming unbearable, you’re light sensitive, or sound sensitive you could be suffering from a migraine.

  1. Sinusitis

Inflamed sinuses from illness and seasonal allergies can lead to this painful condition. If you notice pain and swelling in your sinuses, sinusitis treatment may be needed.

  1. Bronchitis

A simple cold or flu can quickly turn into bronchitis. If you have a persistent and painful cough, you may be suffering. Seek treatment right away to avoid the bronchitis turning into pneumonia.

Visit your local urgent care or walk-in clinic if you believe you’re suffering from any of these conditions. Fall should be enjoyable, don’t let your illness hold you back!
