Don't Let The Flu Scare You

October 15, 2018

What’s scarier than a ghost during Halloween and the fall season?  The flu.

Flu season usually starts right before Halloween and can last up until May.  With everyone coughing and sneezing around you, you’re probably scared you’ll get sick, too.  Spooked about getting sick this fall?  These tips will help you stay flu-free this fall season!

Get Your Flu Shot

Getting your flu shot is the most effective way to prevent getting the flu.  The flu shot is quick, easy, and free under nearly all insurance providers, or low-cost for self-pay patients.  There are little-to-no side effects from the shot and you’re protected for an entire year!  If you aren’t a fan of shots, call your local urgent care center to see if they offer the nasal spray alternative to the flu shot. It’s the same level of protection with no needles necessary!

Wash Your Hands

This may seem like an obvious one, but you’d be shocked at how many people forget how important proper hand-washing is.  During the cold and flu months you should wash your hands even more regularly than you do the rest of the year.  That means washing with soap, warm water, and scrubbing for at least 20 seconds. If you keep hand towels in your home for drying your hands, be sure to change them out and wash them regularly to prevent a buildup of germs.  Teach your children the importance of hand-washing and get them into the habit at home so they practice proper techniques at school when you aren’t around.

Avoid the Spread

The cold and flu both spread rapidly during the fall and winter months and much of that exposure happens without us even knowing it. To prevent catching the cold or flu, avoid things like shaking hands and using hallway railings whenever possible. Doorknobs in public places are a terrible culprit for spreading the cold and flu so remember to wash your hands or use hand sanitizer immediately after opening or closing a door. You should practice coughing or sneezing into your elbow instead of the palm of your hand and encourage your coworkers or peers to do the same. If you suspect someone around you is sick, don’t be afraid to ask them to go home and isolate themselves before making everyone else sick.
