Why Does Blood Pressure Matter?

Blood pressure testing and treatment at AFC Urgent Care

We all have those moments in life where our blood pressure rises; from strees, to heated arguments, from tight deadlines to just feeling overwhelmed with life. While small bouts of high blood pressure are normal and to be expected, when it becomes an everyday issue, it is time to take action…fast!

Our team at AFC Urgent Care of Monroe Road wants to share some insight into what high blood pressure is, how it can negatively impact your heart health, and why you should stop in and talk to our staff about treating it.

What Happens When Your Blood Pressure Is Elevated?

“Blood pressure” refers to the actual pressure of blood coursing through your arteries. When you have high blood pressure, it means that the blood is pushing very forcefully against the artery walls while making its way through the body. Over time, this can damage the artery walls and increase your risk of heart-related health conditions.

In many cases, high blood pressure doesn’t cause any obvious symptoms, which is why it is important to have your blood pressure checked on a regular basis.

Blood Pressure Ranges

  • Normal—Less than 120 and less than 80
  • Elevated—120 to 129 and less than 80
  • High Blood Pressure (Stage 1)—130 to 139 AND 80 to 89
  • High Blood Pressure (Stage 2)—140 or Higher AND 90 or Higher
  • Hypertensive Crisis—Higher than 180 AND/OR Higher than 120

What Is the Treatment for High Blood Pressure?

Blood pressure treatment will depend on the severity—in other words, what category it falls in. Slightly elevated blood pressure may be managed effectively without medication by making lifestyle changes. But in other cases, medication may be required to help bring your blood pressure to a normal range and help you maintain it.

Ways to Manage Blood Pressure

  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Follow a healthy diet.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Reduce your stress.
  • Quit smoking.
  • Reduce sodium intake.
  • Limit the amount of alcohol you drink.
  • Cut out or back back on caffeine.

Has it been a while since you last had your blood pressure checked? Stop by AFC Urgent Care of Monroe Road today for a blood pressure reading. No appointment necessary.

AFC Urgent Care FAQs

  • Why choose AFC for Urgent Care?

With state-of-the-art centers and a professional medical team, AFC provides on-site X-rays, labs, procedures, and more!

  • What's the difference between AFC Urgent Care and emergency room services?

Urgent care is for medical conditions that require prompt attention but do not pose an immediate threat to your health or life. Here is a simple rule of thumb: if your medical issues(s) are life threatening, call 911, or go directly to a hospital emergency room. If not, an urgent care center such as AFC is an excellent alternative.

  • How long will my visit take?

The main advantage of choosing AFC is our short wait times – often under 15 minutes. The total length of your visit will depend on what you’re being seen for, but many patients can be in and out of our clinics in around 30 minutes.
