What Is Causing Your Sore Throat? Is It Strep or COVID-19

Little boy complaining of a sore throat and is going to AFC Urgent Care New Britain to get tested for strep and COVID

Recently, our AFC Urgent Care center in New Britain has been attended by individuals presenting symptoms resembling strep throat. Importantly, these symptoms are not necessarily linked to COVID-19 or the flu. Strep throat is a distinct type of winter illness that can induce throat discomfort and more, making it crucial to undergo a rapid strep test as the initial step towards proper treatment. To assist you in managing concerns and distinguishing strep throat symptoms from COVID-19, AFC Urgent Care New Britain has compiled this guide.

Understanding Strep Throat and its Contagious Nature:

Strep throat is instigated by a bacterial infection, specifically group A Streptococcus (group A strep), affecting the throat and tonsils. The bacteria are highly contagious, typically spreading through respiratory droplets or direct contact. Parents should be vigilant, as children can easily contract it at school if not practicing proper hygiene and distancing themselves from sick peers.

Strep Throat vs. COVID-19:

Unlike COVID-19, which is viral, strep throat is bacterial. Symptoms of strep throat, particularly affecting the throat and tonsils, can include a sudden onset of fever, chills, red and sore throat with white patches, swollen uvula, gray furry tongue, pain while swallowing, and swollen glands in the neck. Other symptoms may encompass fatigue, loss of appetite, headache, nausea, and, in some cases, a rash similar to scarlet fever.

Testing for Strep Throat:

Similar to COVID-19 rapid tests, AFC Urgent Care New Britain offers a rapid strep test (throat swab) to detect the presence of strep bacteria. Given its prevalence among children, proper precaution and aftercare are essential to prevent recurrence. Strep throat can also rarely spread through improperly handled food. The incubation period is typically two to five days after exposure to the bacteria.

Comprehensive Testing at AFC Urgent Care New Britain:

Our center comprehensively addresses the confusion surrounding various winter illnesses, offering testing for COVID-19, flu, cold, and strep. Vaccination is highly recommended, providing an extra layer of defense against viral infections. While these vaccinations don't cure illnesses, they contribute to preventive measures. Swift diagnosis and treatment are crucial for strep throat, involving antibiotics to eliminate the causative bacteria.
