Symptoms of Kidney Disease
Kidney disease moves slowly, so by the time symptoms begin to show, damage may be irreversible. It’s important to take control of your health as soon as possible to prevent irreparable harm. In the early stages, kidney disease can be found through certain blood or urine tests. Symptoms of kidney disease can include:
- Weight loss
- Swollen ankles or feet
- Shortness of breath
- Tiredness or difficulty sleeping
- Blood in the urine and an increased need to urinate
Ways to Prevent Kidney Damage
Eat healthy
Eating healthy is one of the easiest ways to improve your overall health. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat or fat-free dairy are some good options to incorporate. Certain foods are high in the necessary vitamins and minerals we need to live healthy lives. It’s important to try and cut back on sugar and sodium.
Exercise & Rest
Aim to exercise for at least 30 minutes a day. It’s important to participate in exercise that gets your heart pumping and to be a healthy weight. This can reduce your risk of diabetes, which can impact your kidneys. Additionally, it’s important to get 7 to 8 hours of rest each night. Sleep allows your body to recharge and fight off disease.
Limit or Eliminate Smoking & Alcohol
It is common knowledge that smoking cigarettes are bad for your overall health. Smoking can stop the blood flow to certain organs, such as the kidneys, and contribute to high blood pressure. High blood pressure is one of the most common causes of kidney disease. Additionally, alcohol can also contribute to high blood pressure. Try and limit your alcohol intake to one glass for women and two for men each day.
Manage other Illnesses
Other health concerns are the most common causes of kidney disease. This can include diabetes, heart disease, or high blood pressure. Speak with your doctor about getting these other illnesses under control or about preventing them from developing. Cholesterol, blood sugar, and blood glucose are all levels that need to be normal in order to avoid these illnesses. Your physician will be able to provide you with the information you may need about healthy levels.
