Back-to-School Health Tips

August 25, 2021

When children go back to school, they are in close contact with others compared to over the summer. Children are more likely to get sick from their schoolmates due to this. Use these health tips to keep your child healthy this school year.

AFC Urgent Care North Bergen is here to help keep your children safe and healthy. Our providers can recommend and prescribe the best treatment for any illness they may have. Visit our center this school year for urgent diagnosis and treatment.

Teach Good Hygiene

Handwashing is an excellent way to keep your child from getting sick while at school. Teach them proper handwashing techniques and sing a song like the alphabet or happy birthday, so they know how long to wash for.

Additionally, show them how to sneeze or cough properly into the crook of their elbow or sleeve. This can also help stop the spread of germs and keep all children healthy.

Get Annual Check-ups

Annual check-ups can help ensure your child is healthy enough to return to school, allowing them to catch up on any vaccinations. Certain states require some vaccines regardless of the school your child attends. It’s important to be aware of this before going into the check-up.

It’s also recommended for everyone to be vaccinated against the flu by the end of October. The flu can cause severe symptoms, but receiving the flu shot can help decrease them and avoid serious complications.

Provide Healthy Habits

Healthy meals are an essential part of getting back into the school routine. Your child should have a full and balanced breakfast before going to school for the day. This allows them to have the energy and focus they need to be successful.

Additionally, it’s important to help your child shift back into their regular sleep schedule at least a week before school begins. Reading or playing quiet games can help your child relax before bed compared to screen time on electronics or the television.

Calm Anxiety and Worries

There are many mental health concerns to have when it comes to children and schooling. From pressure to stay on top of their grades to social and separation anxiety to the fear of not fitting in.

Help your child be comfortable in their classroom by getting a potential tour ahead of time, knowing their teacher, and encouraging them to get involved in extracurriculars.

Stay Active

After likely having an active lifestyle during the summer, sitting for multiple hours in class can be a hard transition. Afterschool sports and exercise can help keep your child motivated and focused and improve their mood and boost a positive attitude.

Family walks after school or visiting bike paths can be a fun way for the whole family to get involved and get exercising.

Check for Head Lice

The most common age for head lice is between ages 3 and 11. More than 12 million Americans get them annually. Try to check your child for head lice at least once a week. Lice are often found behind the ears and at the base of the neck near the hairline.
