Symptoms of the flu
Signs your child has the flu rather than just a cold is how suddenly the symptoms show up. With a cold, symptoms are not as severe, and they show up gradually. Flu symptoms will be sudden, and all at once. They are typically more severe, involving fever and a worse cough. Signs your baby has the flu include:
- Fever with aches
- Fatigue or weakness
- Cough
- Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
Infants and small children are at higher risk of complications due to their weakened immune systems. If you see any of the above signs in your child, you should bring them in to see a doctor. If left untreated, the flu can cause pneumonia, ear infections, or sinus infections in any baby or toddler. Pneumonia can be life-threatening. It will take about five days for symptoms, such as a fever, to start getting better. There are many ways you can make your child feel better at home.
Treatment options for babies and children
If your baby is older than six months, they are eligible for a flu shot. This is the best way to prevent your little one from catching the flu. If your baby is younger than six months, try to avoid contact with anyone sick. Always talk with a healthcare provider before giving your children any sort of medication. Depending on your baby’s age, their doctor may prescribe Tamiflu or a form of ibuprofen for their fever.
Be sure to give your child plenty of fluids. Loss of appetite is common with the flu, so feed them small meals throughout the day to avoid dehydration. Getting plenty of rest is one way to treat the flu in any person, so allow your child to lay down or frequently sleep throughout the day. Additionally, use a humidifier throughout the day or while sleeping to add moisture back to the air and help with congestion or a cough.
