How Much Exercise Do I Really Need?

Whether you love it or hate it, fitting exercise into your daily routine can sometimes feel impossible. That begs the question—how much physical activity each week is actually enough?

It’s a common question and an important one for your health. That’s why our team at AFC Urgent Care Northern Liberties wants to share some insight.

How Does Exercise Help My Health?

First things first, let’s talk about why physical activity is important. We all need motivation to exercise regularly, so why not let the health benefits be your biggest motivator?

A sedentary lifestyle and excess weight are two key risk factors for many medical conditions. So, then, getting exercise can help you prevent those medical conditions! It also can help you to reduce stress, experience an improved mood and even boost your productivity.

Types of Exercise

  • Cardiovascular, or cardio
  • Strength training
  • Balance movements
  • Stretching, or flexibility

How Much Exercise Do I Need?

Well, your specific needs will vary depending on your specific goals. If you’re looking to lose weight or build muscle, for example, you may need more exercise than the average person. But in general, to maintain optimal health, experts recommend you get at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity each week.

If you bump up the intensity level of your workouts, they recommend 75 minutes of strenuous physical activity per week. Kids need more exercise—the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends all kids get at least 60 minutes of exercise a day.

Exercises That Most People Can Do
