What Does the Flu Feel Like?
If you start to experience mild symptoms of illness like a runny nose, sneezing or sore throat, don’t immediately think it is influenza! Many illnesses start out this way, including the common cold.
You should keep an eye on your symptom progression, though. Minor illnesses like the common cold develop over the course of a few days, while the flu typically has a pretty quick onset of symptoms, leaving you feeling miserable really fast.
Flu Symptoms to Watch For
- Fever
- Runny nose/congestion
- Sore throat
- Cough
- Muscle or body aches
How Can I Treat the Flu?
While you might feel pretty sick for a few days, the vast majority of people will recover on their own within a week or so. In the meantime, get plenty of rest, drink fluids, and if desired, you can treat your symptoms with some OTC flu medication.
If you are in a higher risk category of serious illness from the flu, watch your symptoms carefully. People who are over age 65, small children or anyone who has chronic medical conditions need to be extra cautious as flu symptoms can be more severe. If you fall into any of these categories, your care provider might prescribe an antiviral medication to help reduce your symptoms and the length of your illness.
Things to Avoid When You Have the Flu
- Alcohol and caffeine
- Hard-to-digest foods like heavy grains or greasy foods
- Sugary foods or drinks
- Outings in public, like to work or to school
