Athlete's Foot

Tinea (athletes foot) causes

Athlete’s foot, also called tinea pedis or simply tinea, is caused by a fungus named Trichophyton, that can be found in many places from shower stalls and locker rooms to beauty parlors and even your own socks. While athlete’s foot is contagious, it’s just one of those things–some people will catch it and some won’t. There are things you can do to minimize exposure like avoid going barefoot in public showers or locker rooms and keeping your feet dry and clean.

Symptoms of Athlete's Foot

The symptoms of athlete’s foot include, red, peeling, and dry skin on the bottom of your foot or both feet. The dryness and flaking may also spread to the top and side of the foot. It most frequently starts in the moist areas between the toes thus the need to change and wear dry socks, wear shoes that breathe and air out the feet.

There are many pharmacy medications that can help you with athlete’s foot. Do not continue usage if symptoms do not improve or worsen. Hydrocortisone creams may make fungal infections worse and other types of rashes my mimic athlete's foot. Therefore, if you experience an increase in redness, swelling, bleeding, your symptoms last a really long time, or go away but keep coming back, you should have it looked at by a medical professional.

  • What's the difference between AFC Urgent Care and emergency room services?

Urgent care is for medical conditions that require prompt attention but do not pose an immediate threat to your health or life. Here is a simple rule of thumb: if your medical issues(s) are life threatening, call 911, or go directly to a hospital emergency room. If not, an urgent care center such as AFC is an excellent alternative.
