Flu season is here, with the virus spreading in ebbs and flows through the late spring. It can easily be prevented by getting a flu shot, which immunizes you against the current form of the virus. What is a Flu Shot?
The flu shot is an injection of what scientists and doctors believe will be the current strain of the virus, weakened so you do not experience symptoms but your body will be able to recognize it, fight it and defeat it, leaving you immune for the duration of flu season.
When Should I Get a Flu Shot?
The flu shot takes up to two weeks to take effect and leave you completely immune, so getting it earlier in the season is beneficial. You’ll be able to give your body necessary time to learn the virus, including how to fight and defeat it, without as much of a risk of contracting the flu at full strength before you are immune. AFC Urgent Care Paramus is currently offering the flu vaccination to walk-in patients. The CDC recommends that everyone get a flu shot by the end of October, though they will still be offered throughout the season. If you require a school physical or employment physical, most urgent care centers will be able to give you a flu shot as early as August in order to give you ample time to adjust to the vaccination.
Will I need to get multiple flu shots?
Consult with your doctor or your physician at your local urgent care center about whether or not you should receive a second flu shot later in the season for protection for the last few weeks or months. The flu shot is designed to be effective for six months, so it may begin to wear off a bit near the end of the peak of the season. The flu is constantly evolving and mutating throughout the fall and winter, and a follow-up shot may be able to protect you from the most updated strain.
