Who Gets IBS?

While anyone can get IBS, there are some groups of people who are at a higher risk than others.

Women, people under the age of 50 and those who have a family history of IBS are most at risk for the disease that affects about 20% of adults living in the United States.

Symptoms of IBS

  • Pain

  • Cramping

  • Diarrhea

  • Constipation

  • Change in bowel movements

  • Gas

  • Bloating

  • Food intolerance

  • Fatigue

  • Difficulty sleeping

Can IBS Be Prevented?

Because researchers aren’t entirely certain what causes IBS in all cases, preventing it entirely isn’t really an option. But there steps you can take to prevent flare-ups if you do have IBS.

Try and avoid any food and beverages that could make your IBS worse, including those containing excess fiber, caffeine or alcohol. In addition, you want to make sure you are drinking plenty of water, exercising on a regular basis and quitting smoking if you are a smoker.

  • Diarrhea medication

  • Regular exercise

  • Nerve pain medication

  • Laxative

  • Stress management

  • Antibiotics

  • Meditation
