Although ear infections are most common in children who are age 7 or younger, teens and adults can experience the symptoms of an ear infection, too!

No one wants to deal with the sometimes-agonizing pain of an ear infection. That’s why our team at AFC Urgent Care Portland would like to share some tips on how to find relief sooner rather than later.

Can I Treat My Earache at Home?

Earaches can be the beginning of an ear infection. In fact, it’s the most common symptom of an ear infection.

In many cases, you can find relief using over-the-counter pain medications like acetaminophen or ibuprofen. A warm compress can also be applied on the ear to provide some relief.

Symptoms of an Ear Infection

  • Ear pain

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

  • Dizziness

  • Spinning

  • Fullness in the ear

  • Ringing in the ear

  • Problems with balance or walking

  • Hearing loss

Do You Need Medication to Clear Up an Ear Infection?

It really depends, actually. Up to 80% of ear infections will clear up without requiring antibiotics. OTC pain medications often provide relief.

However, if the pain does not subside after a couple of days, you may need to visit a doctor for treatment. It’s also important to check in with a doctor if you experience recurring ear infections. He or she will be able to determine whether an underlying medical condition is causing your ear pain or if an antibiotic is needed.

Treatment for an Ear Infection

  • Take an antibiotic, if one is prescribed.

  • Apply a warm cloth to the ear that is infected.

  • Take over-the-counter pain medication to ease the pain.

  • Use ear drops as directed.

  • Try decongestants after talking with a doctor or pharmacist.
