When Should You Be Concerned About a Mole?

May 4, 2022

Our skin changes all the time, especially as we age. However, when a mole changes, it could signal a health concern.

During National Healthy Skin Month this November, our team at AFC Urgent Care Portland wants you to know when you should be concerned about a mole on your skin.

Is It Normal to Get New Moles?

For children, it is extremely common to get a new mole. When you’re older, though, it could be a cause for concern.

By the time you’re an adult, you’ve spent hours outside in the sun, making skin cancer a real possibility. That’s why it’s important to keep an eye on your skin and report any suspicious signs, including new moles, to your doctor.

Ways to Protect Your Skin

  • Wear a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30.

  • Use a wide-brimmed hat.

  • Wear sun-protective clothing when possible.

  • Avoid time in the sun between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

When Should You Seek Medical Attention for a Mole?

Not all moles are dangerous. In fact, most are harmless. But you need to thoughtfully examine your skin regularly and keep an eye out for changes to existing moles or new ones popping up.

If you spot any changes, it’s better to be safe than sorry by having a physician take a look.

Signs of a Cancerous Mole

  • Asymmetrical, meaning the sides don’t match each other

  • Border irregularity

  • Color that isn’t uniform across the mole

  • Bigger than a pencil eraser

  • Any changes in size, shape or color
