Herpes simplex virus (HSV) is a complicated virus, and there are two types that you should be aware of. Type 1 (HSV-1) is the type of herpes that most people are familiar with, and approximately 67 percent of adults are actually already infected with the virus. HSV-1 causes infections around the mouth, appearing in the form of blisters and ulcers. You can spread this herpes virus through oral contact, and while it is treatable, it is not curable.

Type 1 is the variant that most people know about, but there is also type 2 (HSV-2) herpes, and this variety is spread by sexual contact. Unlike HSV-1, where the majority of the world is already infected, only about 13 percent of the world’s population is infected with HSV-2. However, this relative frequency does not mean you are safe. In addition to being rarer, HSV-2 is also more dangerous. This virus causes genital herpes, and an HSV-2 diagnosis also increases the risk of acquiring and transmitting HIV.
