Frequently Asked Questions:

COVID-19 What is COVID-19?

Coronavirus is a type of virus that infects a patient’s upper respiratory system. Public health officials and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) name the strain detected in Wuhan, China as “COVID-19." According to the CDC, coronaviruses are “a large family of viruses that are common in many different species of animals, including camels, cattle, cats, and bats. Rarely, animal coronaviruses can infect people and then spread between people such as with MERS, SARS, and now with 2019-nCoV."

Currently there are 5.5 million cases of COVID-19 in the United States as of August, 2020.

What are the symptoms of COVID-19? Who is at risk?

Per the CDC, the symptoms of COVID-19 include the following:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chills
  • Repeated shaking with chills
  • Muscle pain
  • Headache
  • Sore throat
  • New loss of taste or smell

Patients that have a normal and healthy immune system are likely to have these symptoms between 2-14 days, which are not fatal. However, patients with underdeveloped or weakened immune systems could develop fatal symptoms from COVID-19. Additionally, older patients are also highly vulnerable to the virus.

What should I do to prevent and treat COVID-19?

Coronavirus prevention is relatively straightforward, but it requires consistent attention and focus. Below are some of the key prevention methods to manage COVID-19:

  • Clean your hands often by washing them with hot water and soap and hand sanitizer
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth
  • Clean & disinfect every day
  • If you are sick, separate yourself from other people and animals in your home. Practice social distancing – minimum 6 ft.
  • Stay home if you are sick except to get medical care
  • Wear a facemask if you are sick

In the event that you believe you have the coronavirus, or are unsure about your symptoms, please make sure that you take the following precautions to avoid the potential spread of COVID-19:

  • Call ahead before visiting your medical provider or doctor
  • Stay at home and separate yourself from other people and animals in your home through self-quarantine
  • Continue frequent hand washing
  • Wear a facemask
  • Cover your coughs and sneezes
  • Avoid sharing personal household items
  • Clean & disinfect every day
