October 25, 2018

AFC Urgent Care Saugus wants you in the spirit of Halloween this year! Halloween consists of spooky costumes, lots of candy & of course decorating the house! The biggest decorations of Halloween consist of Carving Pumpkins! Carving pumpkins, however, lead to hundreds of injuries every year! We will be discussing some tips you can use to make sure you stay away from the pumpkin carving incidents this year!

Don’t Sharpen your knives

You may think that sharpening your knife before carving your pumpkin is a good idea however it is not! You pumpkin Carving should be done with a knife that is normally sharp. You should not be carving with a dull knife either! If you give your kids a sharpened knife to cut into your pumpkin with, they may end up cutting themselves or getting the knife stuck in the pumpkin. If your knife gets stuck in the pumpkin, the best thing to do is pull it out slowly. Pulling a tuck knife out quickly could result in it slipping out of your hands or going in an unintended direction.

Clean your workspace

When you are going to carve a pumpkin the best thing for you to do is to clean your workspace. Start with the floor & make sure there is no object that you could potentially trip over. The last thing you want to do is have a knife in your hand & trip over a shoe or random box. The next thing to do is to make sure that your surface area is cleaned off. A good trick is to wipe it down & then put newspaper under your pumpkin covering all of the surface areas. This will not only help with the cleanup of the mess but will also help with the safety aspect making sure that your surface area isn’t slippery.

Use a pumpkin carving kit

The easiest way to avoid injury is to buy a pumpkin carving kit! The pumpkin carving kit will come with utensils that are specifically made to cut pumpkins. This will take out the need to use random kitchen tools that are made for cutting food! Kits also sometimes come with stencils for kids & make the whole process more enjoyable & easier. We hope these tips will help you have a great time carving pumpkins & will keep you safe!
