Timely and Helpful Health Articles from your Gatlinburg TN Area, Urgent Care Walk-In Clinic

Now that our area is moving from one season to another, AFC Urgent Care Sevierville wants you to know how to stay safe during severe weather this spring. March Storms Bring April Flowers Although your odds of being struck by lightning at some point in your life are slim (1 in 12,000), why risk it? If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightening. Therefore, seek shelter immediately and avoid using electrical devices and/or equipment during the storm. First and foremost, whether you are home or out and about, you need to always have a plan in place should severe weather occur. Host a family meeting so that everyone is on the same page of where to go and what to do in the case of a tornado or strong thunderstorm. When lightning strikes, be sure to stay away from windows, tall trees and poles. While utility lines and poles can carry an electrical current, a severe storm can also bring winds strong enough to tear down trees and limbs. It’s important you seek shelter and not touch anything metal during a severe storm. If you happen to be outdoors on a hike and severe weather occurs, seek shelter immediately. Take refuge in your vehicle until the storm is over, if you’re able to get to it in time, but avoid touching metal surfaces in your car. If your vehicle is not nearby, retreat to an area that’s dense with small trees surrounded by larger trees. Lower-lying areas, like valleys, are also OK, but watch out for flooding. If you or a loved one suffer an injury, whether it be a cut from a tree limb falling or a twisted ankle from tripping over debris, AFC Urgent Care Sevierville is open seven days a week to provide diagnosis and treatment.
