It might seem like the risk of getting COVID-19 has decreased in recent weeks, with our state opening some businesses back up. But in reality, the risk is still very real and very present.
In fact, as of June 1, more than 1.5 million Americans had been diagnosed with COVID-19, including nearly 30,000 people in North Carolina alone. That’s why our team at AFC Urgent Care South Charlotte wants to offer some tips on how to protect yourself and your family.
Who’s at Risk of Getting COVID-19?
Everyone is at risk of developing COVID-19. But with that said, some groups are at a higher risk. This includes adults age 65 and older, those who are immune-compromised, and anyone living in a long-term care facility.
More than that, though, some groups, including African Americans, seem to be at an increased risk of severe symptoms and complications from COVID-19. So, it’s important to do what you can to protect yourself and those around you.
Symptoms of COVID-19
- Fever or chills
- Cough
- Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
- Fatigue
- Muscle or body aches
- Headache
- New loss of taste or smell
- Sore throat
- Congestion or runny nose
How Does a Mask Help Lower My Risk?
A mask serves two key purposes, which is why the CDC recommends them for nearly everyone age 2 and older. It provides the person wearing it with some level of protection—some recent surveys, in fact, have found it cuts exposure by as much as 85%. But it also provides protection for those around you.
That’s because a cloth face covering helps keep your airborne particles inside, in the case that you are infected with the virus and don’t know it. In other words, it’s something you can do for yourself and for our community.
Other Ways to Prevent COVID-19
- Stay six feet away from others while outside the home.
- Wash your hands regularly with soap and water for 20 seconds at a time.
- Don’t touch your face with unwashed hands.
- Disinfect commonly touched surfaces and objects often.
- Limit time spent outside the home as much as possible.
- Avoid contact with anyone exhibiting symptoms.
