What Can You Do to Take Better Care of Your Skin?- AFC Urgent Care

According to The Skin Cancer Foundation, more Americans are diagnosed with skin cancer every year than any other type of cancer.

With May being recognized as Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month, our team at AFC Urgent Care South Charlotte thought now would be the perfect time to discuss the importance of skin care, as well as signs to look out for when it comes to skin cancer. Early detection is key!

Why Is It Important to Have Good Skin?

When we think about our organs, we usually think of our heart, our liver or even the brain. However, you are probably not thinking about the largest organ in your body—your skin!

Not only does your skin help to protect your internal organs from being exposed to viruses and bacteria daily, but it can also help to protect your body from the sun’s strong UV rays. Taking care of your skin can help it healthy and glowing for years to come, as well as help prevent acne and wrinkles.

Ways to Take Care of Your Skin

  • Cleanse your face at least twice a day.
  • Get plenty of sleep.
  • Make sure you are getting antioxidants through the foods you eat.
  • Gently exfoliate your face.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Use a daily moisturizer.
  • Drink plenty of water.

What Are the Signs of Skin Cancer?

We are all at risk of skin cancer. In fact, one in five Americans—of all races and genders—will be diagnosed with skin cancer by age 70. Because skin cancer is most easily treated in its earliest stages, it is important to keep an eye on your skin and to have regular skin checks with a doctor.

When examining your own skin, look for spots that are unusual or look different than other spots on your skin, that change color or shape over time, that are larger than a pencil eraser or that appear newly on your skin. Talk with your doctor about what you see.

Ways to Protect Skin From the Sun

  • Use sunscreen every day, even if it’s cloudy.
  • Put sunscreen on at least 15 to 30 minutes before going outside.
  • Use a sunscreen with a UVA and UVB protection factor of at least 30.
  • Reapply sunscreen at least every two hours.
  • Seek shelter in the shade, if possible.
  • Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants and skirts when possible, along with hats and sunglasses.
