What Are GI Infections?
Gastrointestinal infections are infections of the digestive system and GI tract that are caused by either bacteria, viruses or parasites. Most GI infections are relatively short-lived, as the infection and symptoms typically go away in just a few days. Some infections and symptoms can last for as long as two weeks, though.

Can I Prevent GI Infections?
Just like with anything, GI infections can’t totally be prevented, but there are many things you can do to dramatically lower your risk of dealing with them. We’ve listed some effective prevention tactics in the section below.

Ways to Prevent GI Infections
- Maintain a healthy diet. Add fiber, lower salt intake, drink lots of water and eat a variety of whole foods rather than processed foods.
- Stay active. Getting at least 150 minutes per week of physical activity can put you on the right path to a healthy lifestyle.
- Washing your hands frequently and thoroughly—at least twice a day for 20 seconds at a time.
