April 26, 2024

The flu, short for influenza, is a viral infection that affects millions of people worldwide each year. It’s known for causing a range of symptoms, including fever, cough, body aches, fatigue, and respiratory issues. However, one lesser-known symptom that can accompany the flu is nausea. Causes of the Flu

The flu is caused by an influenza virus. It normally spreads from person to person through breathing tiny airborne droplets from the coughs or sneezes of someone who already has the flu. People can also get the flu if they touch something that has the virus on it, and then touch their mouth, eyes or nose. People often confuse colds and flu. Although they have some common symptoms, they are different. You can catch a cold several times a year. In comparison, you may be infected with the flu once every few years.

In some cases, a flu virus can cause diarrhea and vomiting. People call this stomach flu. However, it is different from the flu as influenza affects only the nose, lungs and throat.

Common Symptoms of the Flu

Flu symptoms can appear within 2 to 3 days of being infected. The virus usually spreads rapidly, infecting groups of people within a short span of time. The first symptom is a fever between 102°F and 106°F. This is usually accompanied by chills, lack of energy, dizziness, nausea and vomiting. One may experience a headache and have a flushed face. The fever may go away only to be followed by dry cough, runny nose, sneezing and a sore throat. Some people can lose their appetite. People who have respiratory diseases like asthma may experience worsening symptoms.

Can Flu Cause You to Be Nauseous?

The influenza virus has different effects on different people. If the flu has infected the intestinal tract, some people can have nausea and vomiting. If you have these symptoms, give your stomach rest for a while. Keep yourself well hydrated and drink water with electrolytes or have clear broth. Eat foods that are gentle on the tummy such as crackers, rice, toast or bananas. Stay away from dairy, spicy and fatty foods. Return to a balanced diet when you are well again.

It is also important to wear a face mask, use separate utensils for food and drink, and wash hands thoroughly with warm water after changing a baby’s diaper or using the restroom.
