Common Symptoms of Lyme Disease

June 28, 2024

Lyme Disease exposure is highest during the spring and summer. Deer ticks, the most common cause of Lyme Disease, are out in higher numbers when the weather is warm. At the same time, people spend more time outdoors during the warmer months, increasing the chance of encountering a tick.

If you do not take proper precautions like avoiding tall grassy areas, checking for ticks, or covering your skin with long sleeves and long pants, you could get bitten by a tick that is carrying Lyme Disease. With early detection and treatment, Lyme Disease is treatable. Understanding the symptoms of Lyme Disease can help you know when to seek treatment.

If you think you may have symptoms of Lyme Disease, or you were bitten by a tick, AFC Urgent Care Southcenter can help by providing rapid same-day Lyme Disease diagnosis and treatment. Our medical providers are board-certified and trained to identify the early signs of Lyme disease so that you can get the appropriate treatment and make a swift recovery. What Does A Bullseye Rash Look Like?

The most well-known symptom of Lyme Disease is a “bullseye” rash. This rash starts as a patch of red where the bite occurred and then a secondary red ring around that initial bite site. THe shape often is referred to as a bullseye rash because it resembles the shape of a dart board bullseye. The ring-shaped rashes caused by Lyme disease are relatively unique and rare, making them relatively easy to identify. If you have a rash like this and were recently bitten by a tick you should get a blood test for Lyme disease.

Lyme disease has other symptoms, and you might not develop the bullseye rash or notice the rash. Lyme disease symptoms can appear days or weeks after the initial bite, but it is important to try to catch symptoms in their early stages to ensure that you can receive the necessary treatment.

Symptoms of Lyme include:

  • A stiff neck
  • Headache
  • Body aches
  • Chills
  • Joint pain
  • Fever
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Swollen glands

What Are The Stages Of Lyme Disease

Lyme disease can take weeks for symptoms to be recognized. Symptoms tend to worsen over time, which is why it is important to act quickly if you’re experiencing any symptoms of Lyme disease. After weeks to months without treatment, more serious neurological symptoms can start to arise. Heart problems and inflammation of the heart can also arise. Months to years after the bite, if Lyme Disease is not treated, symptoms can progressively become worse and become debilitating. If not caught early enough, Lyme disease can be chronic.
