How to Avoid Hypothermia

Baby it’s cold outside! Due to the freezing temperatures that are occurring this winter, we thought this was a good time to discuss hypothermia, so that you can keep you and your loved ones safe when outdoors. Let’s start with the basics:

What is hypothermia?

Hypothermia is having abnormally low body temperatures, usually caused by prolonged exposure to the cold. The body is losing more heat than it can produce. The body’s temperature has become 35C/ 95F or less. The risk of hypothermia increases throughout the winter months.

 When are you most at risk for getting Hypothermia?

  • Working Outdoors
  • Shoveling
  • Skiing/ Snowboarding /Ice Skating/Playing outdoors

 How to Avoid Hypothermia?

  • Wear extra layers
  • Wear hats, scarves and gloves

 Signs and Symptoms of Hypothermia

  •  Shivering
  • Confusion
  • Gait disturbance
  • Poor Coordination
  • Slurred Speech
  • Shallow breathing

 What can severe hypothermia lead to?

  • Cardiac Arrhythmias
  • Decreased consciousness
  • Possible death

If you or a loved one suspect that you may have hypothermia or any symptoms that look close to hypothermia, it is important to make sure you minimize any further heat loss. Bring the patient indoors, wrap them up in blankets and take off any wet clothing.
