Winter Safety Tips: Skiing & Snowboarding

January 27, 2015

Now that winter is in full swing, it’s the perfect time to remind people about winter safety tips. Though people of all ages enjoy the fun of skiing and snowboarding each winter, the risk of injury – whether minor (cuts, strains, and fractures) or severe (head, neck, and spinal damage) – is very high.

Luckily, a few easy winter safety  tips are all you need to catch big air without getting in big trouble.

  • Take a break if you experience pain or fatigue. Most injuries occur when people overexert themselves to finish the last run of the day.
  • Ski and snowboard on slopes that fit your current ability and experience level.
  • Make sure all equipment, bindings, clothing, and shoes fit and work well.
  • Learn how to land and fall safety to reduce or prevent injury.
  • Keep in shape and condition muscles before participating in winter activities.
  • Make sure everyone is aware of proper procedures for getting help, if injuries occur.
  • Dress in layers to accommodate your body’s consistently changing temperature.

Like any sport, snowboarding and skiing come with many risks and athletes do their best to avoid them. Nevertheless, even the best athletes can sustain serious injuries or become ill if extreme caution is not taken on the slopes. Be sure to review these tips before your next run to ensure the safety of yourself and those around you.
