With flu season fast approaching, the time to get a flu shot at AFC Urgent Care Stamford is here! Each year, our walk-in urgent care receives a supply of the most up-to-date flu vaccination in order to combat the common strain of the influenza virus, which evolves each year. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that everyone over the age of six months old receives a flu shot to provide immunity against the virus annually.
What are the symptoms of the flu?
The flu is an upper respiratory infection with symptoms that include fever, chills, nasal and chest congestion, coughing, nausea and headaches. Patients may also exhibit fatigue and sore throats.
Who should get a flu shot?
While it is recommended that everyone gets a flu shot, patients who are considered high-risk for serious side effects and complications should get the vaccine as early as possible to allow ample time for it to take effect. Patients who are at higher risk for complications include:
- Senior citizens over the age of 60
- Pregnant women
- Young children
- Patients with chronic health conditions including diabetes, asthma and cancer
- Patients with compromised immune systems
Some patients should consult with their physician before getting the flu shot as it may not be the right preventative measure for them. Children under the age of six months are too young for the flu shot to take effect. Patients who are allergic to egg or have had adverse reactions to past flu shots should consult with a physician about the ingredients of the current flu vaccine before having it administered.
How long does the flu season last?
Flu season begins in early fall, between late September and mid October, extending through the winter months before concluding in late May. Cases peak between January and March. The flu vaccine provides immunity for about six months, which is why it is important to get an updated flu shot each year.
