How to Prevent Flu Symptoms this November

Flu season is something we all dread each year, but the flu season is inevitable. There’s no way to know for sure when the flu will peak each year. That makes it even more important to be aware of symptoms, how long they can last, and exactly how contagious the flu is.

How Long Do Flu Symptoms Last?

The length of time someone is affected by their flu symptoms will vary from person to person, but it’s typically somewhere from 3-7 days. A cough, sore throat, and runny nose are lingering symptoms that tend to stick around closer to two weeks. Most flu symptoms are able to be treated and prompt treatment is able to lower the length of time that you feel their effects.

When Are Patients Contagious?

Patients are the most contagious in the 3-4-day period after they first notice symptoms. However, some people are contagious as early as 1 day before they notice symptoms and as long as 5-7 days after symptoms begin. Most people aren’t able to avoid work or school for this long, which is why the flu spreads so rapidly each year. The CDC recommends quarantining yourself as much as possible as soon as you notice flu symptoms.

Where Can You Receive Your Flu Shot or Treatment?

When it comes to the flu, prevention is the best medicine! Anybody over the age of 6 months old is able to receive their flu shot and doing so reduces the risk of contracting the flu by up to 80%. Your local urgent care center or walk-in clinic is the best place to receive your flu shot! You’ll be able to receive the shot quickly, without an appointment, and it’s covered in full by most insurance companies.

If you begin to notice flu symptoms it may be too late for prevention, but the urgent care is still the best option to receive treatment for your symptoms. Stop as soon as you notice symptoms to get the medication and guidance you need to make it through the flu as safely as possible!
