The coronavirus is a virus that originated in Wuhan, China through animals that has spread to a large number of people in the city. With public fear growing and the number of cases increasing, many people are unsure what to do when it comes to their international travel plans. The CDC has released travel guidelines for both local and international travelers – here’s what you need to know.
Traveling to China
The CDC is advising people to avoid traveling to China for all nonessential reasons. Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan are not included in that travel advisory although you should still use caution and only travel if you understand the risk. If you choose to travel to China for essential reasons, you should know that your risk of contracting the coronavirus is substantially higher than it is in the US. There is an active, ongoing, and uncontrolled outbreak happening in China. There is no vaccine or cure for the virus. If you get the virus, you may be denied reentry into the US.
Traveling from China
If you’re a US citizen reentering the country after travel to China, you will undergo a health screening before you’re permitted to enter the country. You will be directed to one of 11 airports qualified to provide these screenings. Once you’ve been cleared, you’ll be allowed to return home. If you test positive for coronavirus, you’ll need to begin immediate treatment and quarantine to help avoid a national outbreak in the states. All non-US residents who have been in China within the last 2 weeks are not being permitted entry in the US at this time.
Other Travelers
If you’re traveling through international airports but not to or from China directly, there’s no need to cancel flights or panic. The CDC guidelines in place for China travelers are strict because they want to keep other travelers safe. People are being screened accordingly and kept away from the general population in the airport if they pose a health threat. You can also opt to wear gloves and a face mask to protect yourself even further if you want to, but it isn’t necessary.
If you have reason to believe you’ve come in contact with coronavirus, contact health officials right away. For all other healthcare needs and concerns, visit a nearby urgent care center for same day treatment.
