Ringworm

What Is Ringworm?

Despite the misleading name, ringworm is a fungal infection, not a worm or parasite. As with other fungus, ringworm thrives in a warm and moist environment. This is why our bodies can become infected so easily, especially in the areas around our scalp, feet and groin. Since the symptoms of ringworm can be similar to other less serious skin infections, it can often go untreated, giving it time to spread.

Common symptoms of Ringworm

  • Round patches of dry skin
  • Itchy & uncomfortable areas of skin
  • Scaly red patches of skin in areas where you sweat

The ringworm fungus primarily infects warm and moist areas of skin, which is why it is common to see the symptoms on sweatier areas of the body. But ringworm symptoms can also show up on the face, hands or finger nails.

Avoid Spreading Ringworm

Ringworm is incredibly contagious and it can spread simply by touching someone who has it. This means if you suspect that you have ringworm, you should avoid physical contact with other people. Children infected with ringworm will often be sent home from school. So it's best to seek treatment before the possibility of spreading an infection occurs.

If you think that you may have ringworm, or believe you have come into contact with the fungus, visit an Afc Urgent Care Clinic near you. You will be able to have a skin test, receive a diagnosis of the skin condition you have, and then work with a physician on a recommended course of treatment.

AFC Urgent Care FAQs

  • Why choose AFC for Urgent Care?

With state-of-the-art centers and a professional medical team, AFC provides on-site X-rays, labs, procedures, and more!

  • What's the difference between AFC Urgent Care and emergency room services?

Urgent care is for medical conditions that require prompt attention but do not pose an immediate threat to your health or life. Here is a simple rule of thumb: if your medical issues(s) are life threatening, call 911, or go directly to a hospital emergency room. If not, an urgent care center such as AFC is an excellent alternative.
