How to Avoid Dry Skin in Winter

January 12, 2022

Dry indoor heat, harsh winter wind, cold air, and low humidity levels can all suck out moisture from your skin. Leaving your skin and areas exposed to these elements looking a lot less radiant than normal.

In winter, dry skin is so prevalent that it feels like an inevitable side effect of the season. Although skin dryness is common during winter, it is avoidable for people who are ready to counter it with a skincare technique.

Signs of Dry Skin:

The following are some of the most common symptoms and indicators of dry skin:

  1. Itchiness
  2. Cracks in your skin
  3. Flakiness or scaliness
  4. Stinging or burning
  5. Redness
  6. Raw, irritated skin
  7. Rough texture

Dry skin, medically known as xerosis can have symptoms with varying severity which can look different depending on the affected area of your body.

Tips to Prevent Dry Skin:

1.      Use tender skin detergent to wash your clothes.

2.      Apply a moisturizer on your face or body, particularly after showers or baths. Try stocking a bottle of moisturizer next to your sink as a helpful reminder and also, always have a travel-size moisturizer with you whenever you are on the go.

3.      Avoid scented soaps, dryer sheets, or other scented products.

4.      Avoid long, hot baths and instead take short, cold showers. A long shower and very hot water can dry out your skin more than a short shower.

5.      Apply natural oils such as coconut oil, mineral oil, seed oil, and vitamin E to prevent loss of moisture in the skin

6.      Use a humidifier at home to prevent eyes, nose, and skin dryness.

7.      Use products containing ammonium lactate or urea to treat thicker parts of cracked skin on the feet, legs, and hands. You can get these products over-the-counter.

8.      To help prevent dry eyes, use a saline eye drop. Also, to relieve the symptoms of a dry nose, do a saline nasal rinse. To protect your lips from dryness, use an emollient.

9.      Apply sunscreen every day:

It might be tempting to cut sunscreen out of your morning skincare routine given the shorter winter days and less sunlight – but think about it. Even during the winter season, there is still harmful UV light that can stress your skin’s moisture capacity, which is important to maintain skin hydration and health. Every morning, try adding a layer of sunscreen after you have applied a moisturizer.

10.  Employ overnight treatments:

Employing overnight treatment is a good way to prevent or revitalize dry skin and emollients are excellent for moisturizing. But, it can take longer for them to get absorbed into the skin because they are a heavier type of cream. Your skin will have enough time it needs to absorb the emollient if you apply it overnight and the treatment will rejuvenate your skin with the oils and moisture it needs.
