What are the Differences Between COVID and the Flu?

October 22, 2021

COVID-19 has been plaguing our society for nearly two years now. Even still, as flu season approaches, you may confuse your symptoms for the flu when it is actually COVID. AFC Urgent Care Toms River provides COVID-19 testing to all patients in need. If you begin to experience any flu-like symptoms, be sure to visit our center to get tested.

Symptoms of COVID

COVID symptoms will appear anywhere from two to fourteen days after exposure. This is one of the most significant differences between that and the flu. Symptoms may change over time and may not all happen right at once.

Common symptoms of COVID include:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Body aches
  • Headache
  • Loss of taste or smell
  • Sore throat

COVID is highly contagious, especially with the new Delta variant running rampant. It’s important to avoid any close contact with other people as long as your symptoms are present. If possible, get vaccinated against COVID to avoid spreading it to others.

While getting COVID after being vaccinated is still possible, your chance of hospitalization and severe symptoms is much lower than being unvaccinated.

Symptoms of the Flu

Flu symptoms will often happen all at once. You can feel as though you have hit a wall and debilitating fatigue is extremely common with the flu. Annual flu shots are recommended to everyone over six months of age if you do not have an egg allergy.

Common flu symptoms include:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Body aches and chills
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea/vomiting (more common in children)

Similar to COVID, the flu is also very contagious. Do not come in close contact with anyone who is elderly or has an autoimmune disorder. Pregnant women and infants under six months who are unable to get vaccinated should also be avoided. These groups can end up in the hospital, which is why it’s so important to get a flu shot and avoid others when you’re sick.

Treating your Symptoms

If you are experiencing any of the mentioned symptoms, be sure to visit AFC Urgent Care Toms River for testing and diagnosis. Our providers can also recommend the best types of treatment for you to help you feel your best.

Certain antiviral drugs can be prescribed or recommended that can help alleviate your symptoms. Additionally, medicine such as ibuprofen or Tylenol can help with fevers or body aches. Be sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day and avoid any foods that worsen your sickness. This can include caffeine, alcohol, or sugary drinks.
