Immigration Physicals for New Residents
Immigration physicals, also known as green card medical examinations, are an important step in the immigration process and a requirement for all family members seeking a family-based green card. Becoming a new resident to the U.S. can be a complicated process, but obtaining your physical can be easy and quick at urgent care.
Do you need an Immigration Exam? At AFC Urgent Care Union City, we have a team of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Designated Civil Surgeons who are here to provide immigration physicals for children, adolescents and adults.
Why do I need an immigration physical?
The purpose of the exam is to identify applicants who may have prohibited health conditions. These prohibited health conditions include, but are not limited to, infectious diseases that are high-risk to public health and safety, physical or mental disorders which cause harmful behavior, and substance abuse or addiction.
The exam is simply meant to ensure that the patient is healthy enough to be productive in the country, while also maintaining the health and safety of greater communities. If your physical results reveal you have a medical problem, we might be able to provide treatment during your appointment thanks to our on-site labs. Otherwise, our physicians are always able to refer you to a specialist or other healthcare resources to get the right treatment for your situation.
What happens during the physical exam?
-
During the visit, you should expect a physical exam, a review of your medical history (including vaccine history), and a few tests. The physical portion of the exam includes an examination of your ears, eyes, throat, nose, skin and any extremities.
-
Be ready to answer a few general questions about your health history, including a review of your previous vaccinations. Your provider may also ask about any past surgeries, illnesses, drug use, and any medications you currently take.
-
Immigration physicals may include blood tests and/or x-rays, which will be ordered by your doctor. Your physical and mental disposition will be assessed through these tests. In addition to your Form I-693, please bring your medical and vaccination records for the doctor. If you don’t have proof of your vaccinations, you can request a blood test to prove immunization.
What happens after the exam?
After the immigration physical examination is complete, AFC Urgent Care Union City will certify form I-693 with the test results of the immigration exam and medical records in a sealed envelope. These results need to be presented to the Department Of Homeland Security and U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services.
Do not open the envelope or tamper with it by any means, otherwise the test results could be considered invalid. In most cases, the results of the immigration medical exam are valid for up to two years.
